Building Permit Information

What You Need Depends On Where You Are Located

Benton County requires a land use permit for structures 200 square feet or larger, and building permits for structures 200 square feet or larger.  Exception: Agricultural buildings are exempt from the building code permits; however, a land use permit is still required.  

Within City Limits

If located within the cities of Foley, Rice, Gilman, St. Cloud, Sartell, Royalton, Sauk Rapids, or the Sauk Rapids Orderly Annexation Area please contact the appropriate city for all necessary building/land use permits.

Foley - Gilmanton Township Orderly Annexation Areas

If located within the Foley - Gilmanton Township Orderly Annexation Area, please contact the City of Foley.

St. Cloud - Minden Orderly Annexation Area

If located within the St. Cloud - Minden Orderly Annexation Area a land use permit is required from the City of St. Cloud first and then a building permit is required from Benton County.

Sauk Rapids - Minden and Sauk Rapids - Sauk Rapids Township Orderly Annexation Areas

If located within the Sauk Rapids - Minden or Sauk Rapids - Sauk Rapids Township Orderly Annexation Area, please contact the City of Sauk Rapids.

Watab Township

If located within Watab Township, a land use permit is required from Benton County first and then a building permit is required from Watab Township.

All Other Areas

A land use and building permit can be obtained through Benton County. County staff will review the land use permit.  Benton County contracts its building review/inspections through Inspection Services of Central Minnesota, Inc.
